L-THEANINE: HOW THIS AMINO ACID WORKS WITH CBD

L-theanine is an ingredient in our Stress Gummies and Stress Drops, but what exactly is it and how does it work with CBD? 

L-theanine is an amino acid that's naturally occurring in green tea, black tea, and certain mushrooms. You can find L-theanine in various nutritional supplements, as it is associated with improvements in mood and stress reduction. 

Like CBD, L-theanine can help promote relaxation and quiet your brain. 

Benefits of L-Theanine For Reducing Stress

While L-theanine may not be effective for everyone, several recent studies have determined that it is an effective ingredient when it comes to combating stress.

A 2008 clinical trial determined that "L-theanine significantly increases activity in the alpha frequency band which indicates that it relaxes the mind without inducing drowsiness." Meanwhile, a 2016 study found that L-theanine supplementation "can assist in reducing acute stress and anxiety in people experiencing stressful situations."

Benefits of L-Theanine For Increased Focus

Research has also shown that L-theanine could help with mental focus, especially when combined with caffeine. According to a 2008 study, "The L-theanine and caffeine combination improved both speed and accuracy of performance of the attention-switching task at 60 min, and reduced susceptibility to distracting information in the memory task at both 60 min and 90 min. These results replicate previous evidence which suggests that L-theanine and caffeine in combination are beneficial for improving performance on cognitively demanding tasks."

L-Theanine Dosage

A cup of black tea contains approximately 20mg of L-theanine, but its effects are better established at higher doses. Doses that have been studied during research include a single dose of 100mg and 200mg daily for for weeks.

How L-Theanine and CBD Work Together

In addition, CBD is a powerful carrier agent, which means it helps you maximize other active ingredients like L-theanine.  

Based on all of the research so far, it is safe — even beneficial — to combine L-theanine with CBD and caffeine. However, combining L-theanine with stronger stimulants, such as pseudoephedrine, or with blood pressure medication could impact the efficacy of those drugs.
