What’s the Difference Between CBD and Weed?

Before we go any further, let’s (quickly) clarify any discrepancies regarding CBD versus THC (AKA tetrahydrocannabinol). “CBD has no psychoactive properties, so it won’t get you high like THC might,” explains licensed psychologist, certified sex therapist, and Modern Intimacy founder Dr. Kate Balestrieri.

What the Research Suggests About CBD, Weed, and Sexual Enhancement

According to Dr. Balestrieri, “Both research and clinical observations are showing some strains of CBD can have a positive influence on people’s sex lives.” In fact, a study from Remedy Review, which surveyed over 1,000 people who used CBD oil, was incredibly eye-opening: 68% of respondents reported that the CBD oil “improved their sexual experience,” while others said it helped them relax and boosted their mood. Another study from 2017 found that cannabis could help “increase sexual desire” in “some users” since it activates the area of the brain that responds to feelings of arousal. “CBD has no psychoactive properties, so it won’t get you high like THC might,” explains licensed psychologist, certified sex therapist, and Modern Intimacy founder Dr. Kate Balestrieri.

Four Ways CBD and Weed Can Improve Your Sex Life: Boosting Libido, Reducing Pain, Alleviating Anxiety, and Increasing Blood Flow

1. CBD Can Increase Your Libido

As previously mentioned, CBD is thought to “interact with the parts of the brain associated with arousal,” according to Dr. Balestrieri. “This can help someone with lower desire than is ideal for them to feel a jump in libido, whether for partnered sex or solo sex,” she explains.

2. CBD Can Reduce Pain + Inflammation

Research has shown that cannabinoids —including CBD — can help reduce inflammation. (Want to learn more? Check out this 2009 study, which deemed cannabinoids as “potent anti-inflammatory agents,” as well as this more recent study from 2019, for more in-depth information.)

When it comes to sex, CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can aid in “reduc[ing] pain and muscle tension from vaginal dryness, as well as post-partum pain during sex,” explains Dr. Balestrieri.

3. CBD Can Alleviate Anxiety

“Based on my work with women, I feel I can comment with confidence that anxiety [and] self-consciousness can definitely impact the ability of women to enjoy sex,” Oatman explains. This is another area where CBD can help. According to Dr. Balestrieri, CBD can aid in “reduc[ing] anxiety, calm[ing] nerves, and help[ing] a hyper-aroused nervous system return to a state of regulation.”

In other words, it’s safe to say CBD can help you feel more confident in the bedroom — and Oatman agrees. “We could certainly suggest that CBD assists increased desire for sex and increased enjoyment of sex,” she says.

4. CBD Can Increase Blood Flow

According to Dr. Balestrieri, topical forms of CBD (such as creams, serums, and oils) can help increase blood flow. What’s more, this leads to increased sensitivity. (In the best ways possible, of course.) As a result, the increased blood flow offers “more arousal and pleasure potential,” according to Dr. Balestrieri.

Does Weed Make You Horny?

While some people may experience increased sexual desire and arousal while using cannabis, this effect is not universal and may depend on factors such as individual biology, dosage, and frequency of use. It's also important to note that cannabis use can have both positive and negative effects on sexual health and function, and individuals should discuss any concerns with their healthcare provider.

However, it's important to note that cannabis affects everyone differently, and some people may experience decreased sexual desire or difficulty achieving orgasm while using it. Additionally, frequent or heavy cannabis use may have negative impacts on sexual health and function.
