Chronic stress is more serious. Our bodies are literally not made to handle repeated stress or constantly feeling threatened, and our mental and physical health is at stake. A bad relationship, a toxic job situation, or dealing with grief can all be factors that trigger chronic stress. 

A note on anxiety: Remember that stress is different than anxiety (though definitely related). Anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, OCD, and PTSD are serious. A mental health professional can help determine and diagnose your type of anxiety and suggest coping mechanisms.
